This year’s first Academy Pizza Luncheon was an enormous success! 105 students devoured a whopping 23 pizzas in half an hour, and had a lot of fun. Are you interested in Academy yourself, or just wondering what it is? Maybe you just want some free pizza. Either way, here’s a little bit about the program.

FMHS's ComTec Academy is intended to fully prepare students for college. Integrating career technical education, business partnerships, mentoring, and internships, new generations are equipped with determination, self-motivation, and high standards for themselves throughout their high school journeys.

Originating from Philadelphia in the late 1960's and reaching California by 1980, this program has been transforming students for over 50 years. Currently, there are about 340 funded programs throughout California schools. The Academy has a voluntary student selection process that targets interested ninth graders. With a team of dedicated teachers and a close, family-like environment, following the path to Academy is always the best choice for the college-bound student.

Members of the FMHS Academy will practice working in groups in order to prepare for the real work force. Field trips to local institutions, such as the Museum of Tolerance and Huntington Library, are frequent. Consequently, students produce countless achievements each year. By Junior year, students will focus on a career theme and take related academic classes. California university A-G requirements are completed by each student's graduation.

Sophomore year, members will have 4 Academy classes: Introductory Academy Pathways (Technology), Academy Biology, Academy World History, and Academy English. Juniors will take an Academy Science, History, and English class as well, then choose a Pathway (a general field of work to pursue) for their Tech class, where they will work with mentors from the community who are experts in their fields and provide real-world opportunities and training. Seniors will follow suit, and continue their practices in their chosen Pathway.

Currently, FMHS offers 7 unique Pathways: Animation, Desktop Publishing, Journalism/Web Design, Engineering/Robotics/Technology Navigation, Small Business, Video Technology, and Yearbook. Students can join the Academy either Sophomore or Junior year, though it is recommended that you join as a Sophomore.

Hopefully you decide to join the Academy family, too!
