In September’s edition of the Falcon Beat, FMHS has chosen Nicole Powell for the Alumni of the Month! All throughout her high school and college years she has played sports, and has been dedicated to them ever since. She is currently helping our girls Varsity Volleyball team as an assistant coach, and we are so glad to have the opportunity to speak with her.

FB (The Falcon Beat): What year did you graduate high school?

NC (Nicole Powell): I graduated from FMHS in 2005.

FB: What is your favorite memory as a student at FMHS?

NC: It's hard to narrow it down to only one. Being an athlete all four years was very memorable and the absolute best part of my high school experience.

FB: How dedicated did you have to be to become athlete of the year?

NC: I was taught early on that dedication and commitment would help me achieve my ultimate goal. I rarely missed practice, and spent many hours after practice perfecting my game. I played in adult leagues for softball, and utilized the basketball and volleyball courts in Pine Mountain daily.

FB: Are you currently in or have you attended college? If so, what college? How was the experience?

NC: I graduated from California State University of Bakersfield with my Bachelors of Science in Kinesiology. I am in the process of receiving my credential in hopes of being a teacher in Physical Education. The experience was awesome. I was involved in volleyball and basketball as well as intramural activities. I made lifelong friends in many of my classes, and have kept in contact with a few of my professors.

FB: Do you have any advice for future college students?

NC: Be as involved in activities as much as possible. Join sororities/fraternities. Learn what you enjoy and take different classes. Your major could change in a heartbeat! Most of all- have fun!

FB: What encouraged you to help with Varsity Volleyball? What kind of expectations have you set for the girls?

NC: The love for the game is what compelled me to assist. I love sports, teaching others, and seeing the growth of the athletes. Mrs. Lemburg has been a mentor to me since I was in high school and has helped me grow like no other. We have the same expectations for our teams, and I think that's why we work well together. We expect dedication, commitment, respect for themselves and other athletes, as well as being positive role models to their peers.

FB: Lastly, how do you feel about the 2016 Volleyball team?

NC:I am very hopeful for this season. We have a strong team who works hard and adjusts to every crazy idea we throw at them. Practices may be rough at times, but we always show what we are made of during games.

FB: Thank you so much for your time, we really appreciate it and good luck in all your future ventures!
