Our student athlete of the month is Grace Gilani. She is a senior at Frazier Mountain High School. Grace has played soccer, softball, and her favorite sport, volleyball, which she has played for eight years of her life. She excels at backrow, and is an excellent server, ranking 4th in High Desert League for 45 aces. Grace plans on going to Chico State next fall, to major in journalism with an emphasis in public relations
FB (Falcon Beat): What encouraged you to pursue volleyball in middle school?
GG (Grace Gilani): “Well, Mr. Stewart was looking for kids to play volleyball. I was horrible but I had a really good serve. My favorite position is backrow, but I’ve always wanted to block, however I am too short to do so.”
FB: How do you work with your teammates on the Varsity volleyball team?
GG:“I try very hard not to get frustrated at not only myself but my dear friends. I try my hardest to encourage them the best I can and cheer them on.”
FB: This year, the FMHS volleyball team has gone a long way. How do you feel about such a successful season?
GG: “I feel very proud that I was part of it and I also feel proud that I was part of the team last year when we won CIF.”
FB: What do you enjoy about volleyball and why?
GG: “Even though I am scared about playing every game, I remember that I know what I am doing out there and that the rush that I get when I do play is something that I won’t forget. I also love making memories with my team and trying my hardest to play to the best of my abilities.”
FB: Do you plan on playing volleyball in college?
GG: “No, because the competitive level is something I will never achieve. I have faith in my fellow team mates that want to play college volleyball. I will do intramural leagues to have fun and continue to do the sport I love.”
FB: Do you have any words of wisdom for future Varsity volleyball players?
GG: “Don’t get stressed, even though conditioning seems extremely hard, you will make it through, and once season starts you won't work out much. Remember, there is always a light at the end of the tunnel and that just so happens to be CIF. I hope that the future FMHS volleyball team is able to achieve all the accomplishments we've been so lucky to receive.”
Thank you for your time, Grace. Frazier Mountain Journalism hopes you and your volleyball team make it far into the playoffs this season.
