On November 30, all FMHS basketball teams had their first game of the season! They played against a small the small but worthy school, Boron Junior-Senior High School. The school only has a population of about 300 students from grades 7-12. Although their school may be small, Coach Travis Day prepared the Boron team for the formidable Frazier Mountain team.
The boys varsity game started right after the girls varsity, having about 30 minutes to warm up before 6 o'clock. Frazier Mountain was determined to work their hardest for the first game- rarely missing a practice layup or jumpshot. Three seniors from Boron, who were announced in our gymnasium were A. Heltsley, TJ Naples and Tyler Beardsen. Junior Charles Robertson started the game with the jump ball, along with the other starters Ryan Oman, Mikey Flinn, Bruno Perez, and Lucanus Smith whom of which are all seniors.
The entire game was unpredictable. Throughout the first quarter, our boys barely stayed ahead of the Boron Bobcats by 1 or 2 points, ending the first quarter with a score of 11-9. The second quarter we lost a lead with the Bobcats scoring 12 and the Falcons only scoring 5. However, we were determined to bring it back. While the Bobcats were still in the lead, the Falcons ended the 3rd quarter scoring 20 points while Boron had only 18 points; making the score at the end of the third quarter 36-39. With one more quarter to go, at this point is was a matter of a simple “good defense, good offense” mindset. The boys had to work their hardest.
All during the last quarter, the teams kept tying with their scores. Bobcats would make a layup, Falcons would get a breakaway, and the cycle repeated. In the end, the Falcons ended the game with a respectable score of 48-53. The support from our small school for the boys was still existing, throughout the good and the bad; the win and the loss. Bruno scored the most points (14), with Mikey and Ryan following behind him with 11 and 10 points scored.
Their first game may have been a loss, but with the strong leadership of Nicole Powell as their head coach and the unbreakable team bond, they have the potential to make it far this season. They are surely making the school proud and doing the basketball program justice.
Good luck in the rest of the season Falcons, make this year one that FMHS will never forget!
