On February 8th, the academy Seniors traveled all the way to Yorba Linda, California to visit the Richard Nixon Presidential Library and Birthplace. The trip started out right at 7:45 as the class prepared themselves for the second, and final, 2 hour journey for this field trip. The original field trip to the Nixon Library was scheduled for December 9th, but due to heavy traffic and bomb scares, was rescheduled to February 8th.
The field trip really began once they made it to the library. Immediately they were taken to a theater that featured a short film depicting Nixon’s accomplishments through his political career that are often overshadowed by the Watergate scandal. After the film the group toured through several different galleries depicting every issue the country faced towards the beginning of his presidency, and just the solutions President Nixon proposed to help our country in their time of need. The biggest issue the president faced was the ongoing war in Vietnam. An interesting fact the group learned was President Nixon was the acting president when we put the first man on the moon. The group also saw how President Nixon strengthened relations between both Russia and China in the time that communism was spreading through the world.
The group got to see President Nixon’s oval office, a replica the library created to help add to the presidential theme. One senior, Brianna Edwards, joked that her favorite part of the trip was “getting to sit in the president's very comfortable chair.” The groups were able to see the meetings between several huge figures such as Fidel Castro, Mao Zedong of communist China, and most importantly Elvis Presley.
Towards the end of the tour the class was able to see not only the house that President Nixon was born in, but also see his final resting place with his wife, and the presidential helicopter that he used during his presidency. Seniors, Elliana Shillig and Paola Lopez, said they loved field trip but wished it was a longer tour and wished they were able to go inside the helicopter. All-in-all the field trip was a great success, and all the seniors had a blast!
