The Frazier Mountain FFA Chapter has been participating in a myriad of events throughout the past few weeks:

On November 30, fourteen seventh and eighth grade students from El Tejon Middle School traveled to the Wyndham Hotel and a park nearby in Visalia for the first ever FFA Discovery Conference. This conference was geared toward the newly approved FFA program for California middle schoolers. This program is designed to give younger students the opportunity to learn about and experience FFA before they move on to high school. According to El Tejon’s science teacher Christy Zimmerman, the conference was a big success and the students had a great time meeting new people and playing games. “Since this was the FIRST EVER conference of it's kind, the experience was pretty good!” Zimmerman plans on kicking off this program right here on the mountain for students at El Tejon. Just two days prior to this event, Frazier Mountain’s Greenhand Officers went to a conference of their own.

On the 28th, Greenhand Officers, Cassandra Larmon and Elizabeth Burket-Theone competed against about fifty other freshmen during the Best Informed Greenhand (BIG) Conference at Bakersfield College. According to FMHS’ FFA Advisor Mrs. Bizzini, “...they all took a 150 question test which consisted of FFA history, its constitution and other general information.” The pressure was on for these young officers, and the rest of the team waited expectantly for the results. Mrs. Bizzini got back to us as soon as possible with the good news: Elizabeth had won second place, and Cassandra had also done very well!

Just a week or so before, on the 18th and 19th, both Chapter and Greenhand officers from the Frazier Mountain team volunteered to assist at one of Tejon Ranch’s Equestrian Competitions. The Officer team watched as competitors rode horseback through a course; and helped to set up and clear balloons on poles for the cowboys to shoot in order to receive more points in the competition. This was a wonderful learning experience for the Officers, as well as an opportunity to serve in their community.

Both Greenhand and Chapter Officers participated in the Opening and Closing Ceremony Competitions the same week. The Officer teams were judged on how well they were able to memorize their lines, posture, annunciation, etc. This was a great public speaking experience for everyone involved; and all of the Officers did very well against the competition.
